Mechanical Engineering/Statement of purpose-1

After considerable thought and deliberation I have realized that pursuing a graduate program in the presence of renowned faculty and cutting edge technology will enhance my skills and capability to secure a highly challenging and ambitious career. I seek admission to the Vanderbilt University to work hard and accomplish my educational goals. My family members, few of them are engineers and technocrats, encouraged me to pursue my undergraduate studies in engineering. I secured a total aggregate of 94.25% in my twelfth grade and an aggregate of 96% in the core subjects (Maths, Physics and Chemistry). Due to my excellent grades, I got into Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, one of the prestigious institutions in India managed by the SPIC group of companies.

I am currently pursuing my final year B.E. in Mechanical Engineering. My education in Mechanical Engineering was an eye-opener to say the least. The curriculum at Sri Venkateswara college of Engineering has exposed me to the entire gamut of mechanical courses thus laying a strong foundation for my fundamentals. Apart from my curriculum I have also enhanced my knowledge by learning AutoCAD, C and C++. Above all, my collective experiences at this college have helped me to define my career goals.

In the context of global competition for higher learning, it is imperative for me to go in for higher education in a country like United States of America where tremendous research is going on in universities and industries. After carefully analyzing the various options open to me, I have decided to pursue my graduate study in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

My study objective is to do my masters in Mechanical Engineering and specialize in CAD/CAM/CAE. Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing offers very good career opportunities and possible alternatives for budding engineers. Treating design as an independent activity, which is separated from the manufacturing process, is time consuming and outdated. Currently the ideal scenario is to integrate all aspects of design and manufacture into one department under the control of one group. This has lead to the development of CAD/CAM/CAE tools. The invasion of design in every aspect of life, be it industrial or consumer products, has further propelled this field. With the advent of MNCs the demand for shorter lead times and improved productivity has fueled the quest for new generation engineers with enriched knowledge on latest design and manufacturing techniques.

I had completed my inplant training at Ashok Leyland Ltd., a pioneer organization in India. Ashok Leyland offers a comprehensive product range, including trucks, buses, a host of special application vehicles and diesel engines for industrial, genset and marine applications. During my internship as an undergraduate trainee at Ashok Leyland, I learned how the various accessories are manufactured and assembled. During this period I also learned that success couldn’t be obtained overnight but by continuous hard work.

As part of our engineering curriculum I have undertaken visits to a number of industries like Audco India Ltd, Lucas TVS Ltd, Penta Daewha Ltd, Wheels India Ltd, Ennore power plant, Universal Carborundum Ltd etc. These visits have revealed me to the latest technologies in use. They also gave me an exposure to the general working structure of an industry. I am currently doing a project on ‘Rejection Rate Analysis and Optimization’ with Ms Alcaast India Ltd. who are manufacturing die-cast and forged components for engineering industries. The project is to be completed by March 2003. I am sure that this experience will aid me in both my graduation and in realizing my dreams.

Apart from my academic career, I have also excelled in sports. I am a state and national tennis player. I have won several tournaments for my college. I represented my college in the intercollegiate tournament conducted by the Tamil Nadu government and won the trophy. I also have the credit of winning the North Division Tournaments conducted by the University of Madras for four years. As a result of my achievements in the field of tennis, SPIC FOUNDATION awarded me scholarships for three consecutive years in my college.

I have realized that pursuing a graduate education would be the next step, bearing in mind my career goals and objectives. A graduate education in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in CAD/CAM/CAE will help me to develop exceptional competence in the state-of-the-art technology and hone my skills to meet the growing standards. I do hope that you will be pleased with my scholastic achievements and give me an opportunity to prosecute my higher studies at your esteemed university with full financial assistance. I look forward to an interesting experience in graduate study and research at your university, which alone will fulfill my ambition.

Thank you for considering my application.
